Story Walk Activity a Huge Hit

Newsaoût 2014

Global’s Community Outreach program organized a special “Story Walk” activity for Drop-in attendees.

At the Blackburn Hamlet and Riverside South sites of its outdoor summertime Drop-ins, Global’s Community Outreach program organized a special “Story Walk” activity for Drop-in attendees. Children and their parents/caregivers took a walk around the park, stopping at designated spots along a prepared route, where together they read a large posted page of the book The Big Storm (by author Nancy Tafuri). As the story progressed at each post, the children collected little pictures in a bag to help them retell the story later, and engaged in activities which corresponded to elements of the story, including making thunder with pizza pans, entering a bear cave (tent) and running through a rainbow (made of coloured ribbons). Our creative Community Outreach team expanded upon the excellent StoryWalk® resources (one of thirty such stories) available through the Early Literacy Specialists at the Parent Resource Centre in Ottawa.
